Never mind whether Usain Bolt can break the world record in 2012, will the British weather ruin the racing?
The Olympic and world 100m champion is aiming for the double sprint title this year, but finished last in the 200m in New York on Saturday. While the competition are flying C the American Carmelita Jeter heads the world rankings this season with a 100m time of 10.70sec, followed closely by another Jamaican who is thinking of going for both sprint distances this year, Veronica Campbell-Brown, in 10.70sec. Fraser-Pryce just about made it under 11 seconds when she ran on Eugene's fast track to post a time of 10.95sec. The 24-year-old missed three months last season due to a doping suspension and seems to be struggling to regain her form this year.
Steve Mullings: a surprise 100m contender?
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has her work cut out
When heavy rain and strong winds hit both the Oslo and New York Diamond League meets last week, the heavens dealt us a serious reminder of just how disruptive bad weather can be to track and field. Steve Mullings and Tyson Gay C the two fastest men in the world this year C battled into a vicious headwind to record a joint time of just 10.26sec. Results were no better in the triple jump where, despite beating a field that included Teddy Tamgho, Phillips Idowu could not jump further than 16.67m; meanwhile in the women's high jump Blanka Vlasic and her rivals could not even clear 2m. Luckily for Bolt the rain stopped in Oslo just in time for his 200m race, enabling him to run the world's leading time of 19.86sec. Had the race taken place just minutes later, though, the triple world record holder might have been in trouble as the rain poured down once more.
The South African aiming to compete alongside able-bodied runners at this year's world championships and next year's Olympic Games made a strong case for himself in New York when he beat the European champion, Kevin Borle, and two other able-bodied runners over 400m. Despite difficult conditions and running from lane one, Pistorius finished fifth overall in the second-fastest time of his career, 45.69sec. The 24-year-old already holds the B qualification time for 2012 of 45.61sec, but is still hoping to hit the A qualifying time of 45.25sec to guarantee his place.
Five Things We Learned from the Diamond League in New York and Oslo

We're always hearing the athletes complain about the one-strike-and-you're-out dictat that was introduced last season, but on Saturday afternoon in New York the rule made a mockery of the men's 100m. Last year Tyson Gay had warned that the rule could mean seeing a big name such as Usain Bolt disqualified at a world championships or Olympic Games. This year a field of nine men was reduced to six after three successive false starts. Worst of all, in the second disqualification the wrong man was forced to walk when Travis Padgett,Homme Sacs Louis Vuitton, who leapt out of his blocks, was deemed the protagonist despite the TV replays showing Keston Bledman, in the lane next to Padgett, to have flinched first and set the sensor off. Bledman eventually finished in third place, while Padgett, louis vuitton Femme Monogram ldylle, the Olympic silver medallist Richard Thompson and Monzavous Edwards were forced to watch from the sidelines.
Oscar Pistorius: two legs good, no legs better
The 28-year-old pulled off a shock victory over his good friend and training partner, Tyson Gay, in New York on Saturday, holds the second fastest 100m time in the world this year of 9.80sec, and has already run faster C on three occasions C than Usain Bolt's 2011 best of 9.91sec. Despite being a 4x100m world championship gold and silver medallist in the Jamaican relay teams of 2007 and 2009, Mullings has rarely hit the headlines as an individual. On the one occasion his name did crop up it was for a two-year doping suspension,Ralph lauren pas cher, after he tested positive for testosterone in 2004. Pertinently,http://weyak.kolshi.info/profile.php?user=icbcgaga&v=comments&v=comments, many have questioned the fairness of Mullings' presence at Diamond League meetings while Britain's Dwain Chambers continues to be shunned for a doping ban.
No one has a crystal ball and if I just take myself as an example, five years before I won bronze at the Sydney Games I would not have been touted as an Olympic medallist - I wasn't even running the 400m at that time. Five years does not sound very long, but it is long enough to bring through a handful of athletes who can reach not only the podium, but also the top spot.
No - Katharine Merry
The government is unbelievably supportive when it comes to London 2012. But anybody who is going to put billions of pounds into any project and not demand success is foolish.
I see a few green shoots popping up: Colin Jackson with his set-up with Tim Benjamin and Rhys Williams; Becky Lyne,Longchamp Eiffel Tower, who won bronze in the 800m in Gothenburg; Mo Farah, Jo Pavey and Paula Radcliffe, should she decide to be there.
Look at the tennis star Andy Murray. He is much fitter than he was last year, cheap tods, he has been working with Michael Johnson, who is waiting in the wings in America to help any of our British runners. The opportunity is there for us.
So much has changed in the past nine months. The no-nonsense approach of the UKA performance director Dave Collins may not be appreciated by everyone, but he makes no apology for it: his remit is to improve performance and that is what he is trying to do. UKA has brought on board a number of high-achieving former athletes and the commitment goes beyond involving myself and Daley Thompson as mentors and Steve Backley and Linford Christie as coaches. Beneath that level, three of the six talent development managers have won medals at major championships. The experience of former athletes like Mick Hill and Rob Denmark is making an incredible difference.
Indeed, it will need a miracle for Britain's track and field athletes to win a gold medal when the Olympics hit our shores in London in 2012 and, if the competition was taking place this summer, you would not know where one was coming from. But the Games are not happening for more than five years and, as someone who saw Kelly Holmes win both the 800m and 1500m in Athens in 2004, I believe in miracles, because few people could have predicted that 12 months earlier.
A lot of people criticise the system, but I see younger athletes who do not realise what they have to do themselves to succeed. Some think that if they train twice a day, five days a week then they are committing themselves and can go out on the weekend and have a few bevvies, but it is about far more than that. I am not pretending everything is rosy in the garden, but you cannot sit and moan about it - you have to do something to change the situation. From what I saw of the juniors in Beijing last year there is enough talent coming through with the right attitude. Do we need a miracle? No way. Do we still have work to do? Definitely.
Why we are not as successful is a huge debate. Some of the issues are to do with schools and we are reaping what we sowed when suddenly it was decided that PE and games would not be part of the curriculum and teachers were not encouraged to take kids for competitive sport. Where did that generation go?
Not that they were all miracles because, of course, some were the best ever but we had more than four athletes overall in the world's top 10s. In the next couple of years Britain needs to go from four to eight or 10 and to push on from there. One or two need to be in the top three and, once you are in that position,http://www.almanca.com/profile.php?user=1707&v=comments&v=comments,Sacs Lancel Premier Flirt, you have the chance to win the event.
Roman Abramovich poured his millions into Chelsea and, as soon as they are second in the Premiership, he starts to kick up a fuss. There is no such thing as a free lunch but we have some names who are hungry for that success. Believe in those individuals and maybe the miracle will happen.
In 1976, when I returned from Montreal with a bronze, it was Britain's only athletics medal. Back then it was probably said that four years later it would be a miracle if we won gold in Moscow but Steve Ovett, Sebastian Coe, Daley Thompson and Allan Wells all triumphed.
vuittonpaschere.com
There is no point people taking issue over the assertion that Britain has become progressively worse at athletics because we have. You cannot spin it; the facts speaks for themselves. Last year we had only four athletes in the world's top 10 in their event and in Gothenburg, at the European Championships, we did not win an individual event when in the past we would have won seven or eight. Never mind the world level, our standing in Europe has gone down at a time when the European standard itself has dropped.
For Colin to suggest that only the heptathlete Jessica Ennis is special enough to win gold in London is frustrating. When I attended the World Junior Championships last year in my role as a mentor for UK Athletics the team brought home five medals. Two years before, in Olympic year at Grosseto, they had failed to win one. We are getting a lot of finalists and a lot of athletes running personal bests in major championships, which shows we are heading in the right direction.
It is extremely defeatist to say it will take a miracle for any British athlete to win gold in 2012. Such a claim puts a dampener on young athletes who have aspirations to do so. If you have someone like Colin Jackson, whom they look up to, saying that they have no chance of winning, they absorb the negativity. I am optimistic but I am not saying we should be unrealistic about our prospects; I do a lot of motivational speaking and stress that "Not everyone can be the best, but everyone should aim to be the best". Winning is about mentality as much as anything and athletes often perform better than they think they will at major championships.
But I believe in British athletes and, if individuals go back to their coaches and plough their own Olympic furrows, then success will happen. When Kelly won her two golds, it did not mean the system in the sport was brilliant; it meant Kelly Holmes and her own support team were brilliant.
Will it take a miracle for Britain to win track gold in 2012?
Yes - Brendan Foster
No one would argue that there has been a missing generation in athletics. Britain has not got the abundance of household names that existed a few years ago when we were winning a lot of medals because we have all retired. But UK Athletics has acknowledged not enough has been done to ensure that success continued and I believe we do now have the talent and systems in place to turn that around by 2012.
